Nature of the Internet

Surfers come online to find an answer or a solution.  The activities to help the internet users to find that answer or solution can be free or at a cost.   What determines whether people would pay for something?

That's perhaps is the key of what makes "it" to be a business, isn't it?

In fact, survey has shown that more than 97% of the people who try to earn money online do not (or have not) earned more than $100 in their entire "career". 

Perhaps, we need to understand what makes or breaks a business. 

Internet marketing can be explained as strategies/ tactics utilized to make money online.   However, before we get to internet marketing, perhaps, it's better for us to define what an Internet Business is.

Internet business can be defined as:

Online commercial activities engaged in as a means of livelihood or profit, or an entity which engages in such activities.

If you are online trying to engage in "commercial activity", one needs to figure out what products he/she can deliver online, that people would like to pay to have.

Research has shown that the three biggest categories of things being purchased online are investing information (e.g. financial news subscription), travelling related (e.g. airticket, hotels) and the third one, I'd put them in a collective category related to sex, gambling and illegal activities.

So, do you want to get started with earning money online? Not so fast... you must also aware one other term: internet marketing.

Internet Marketing is commonly understood as activities performed to earn money online. 

So, you ask, what's the difference between internet marketing vs internet business?

The distinction is subtle but vital.

Many people get confused by various internet marketing techniques with internet business.  Many online venturers focus on the tools - the tactics, instead of the actual products that people are craving for. 

We need to realize that people come online for different purposes. Some search for information, others for fun, while others are just using it for communications, e.g. email or social sites like facebook.  Most people come online primarily to seek information, and they don't necessarily purchase anything.  Statistics show only 22% of the internet users buy stuff online, although the number seems to be increasing.

Having said that, many people have also claimed their share of wealth from the internet and many of them are enjoying their internet lifestyle, aka they earn a living with nothing but the net. 

Can you succeed online?

I can't answer you that; there are just too many variables.  Depending on your experience and knowledge, there are various options for you to succeed online, no matter what your objectives maybe.

It's true that people do earn money online; and there are countless ways to do so. You can choose the one most appeal to you.

Which method should you choose?

No matter what business model you choose, you need to focus.  Can you get rich by selling ebooks? Yes you can. Can you get rich by doing drop-shipping? Certainly. Can you find your fortunate by doing affiliate marketing, CPA marketing or Auction sites?

Yes, all of them are viable options.

But, you cannot hope to get rich by doing ALL of them together.

The key is FOCUS. Nail down to a particular model. Learn what you can do and what you can't do. Deliver what your audience wants.  Focus is not enough, because you also need the right knowledge and tools.

Think for a moment, what's the difference between a corner store, run by a single person and a multinational company, say McDonald?
